VanFLIP: satire that ships to search and social in one move

A satire news publication we designed front to back, with a custom WordPress publishing layer that posts to Facebook and Instagram in one move and an AI reel studio that turns each story into social-ready video.

VanFLIP is a satire news publication in the vein of The Betoota Advocate, The Onion and Clickhole. We designed the look and feel, then built a custom publishing and social distribution layer over WordPress: stories publish to the site and out to Facebook and Instagram in one move, and an AI reel studio turns each story into social-ready video, quotes and carousels.

The brief

VanFLIP set out to do for the internet what The Betoota Advocate, The Onion and Clickhole do for their own corners of it: sharp, fast satire that travels. Satire lives or dies on distribution, and most of that is social, so the site needed a look that reads well on a phone, a publishing process that does not slow the joke down, and search foundations that keep bringing readers in long after a post first lands.

Design and ethical SEO

We designed the brand and front-end from the masthead down: a clean, confident news look tuned for quick reading and heavy social referral. SEO was built into the templates rather than bolted on afterwards, with sensible structure, metadata and schema that help stories rank on their own merits. The emphasis throughout was ethical optimisation, earning search and social attention through clarity and speed rather than dark patterns or keyword stuffing.

Publishing and social distribution

On top of the standard WordPress editor we built a custom publishing layer. From one screen an author can publish a story to the site and push it straight to Facebook and Instagram, through a social integration layer we built to handle the cross-posting. It removes the usual scramble of copying links between apps and tabs, which matters when the value of a satire piece is highest in its first hour.

The AI reel studio

We also built a reel creation product for Instagram and TikTok. It uses AI to summarise a story into a short, social-optimised script, then premium AI voice models add spoken narration, turning an article into a reel that is ready to post. Authors can publish reels programmatically or by hand, and the same studio produces other formats as well, including quotes and carousels, so a single story can go out as several pieces of media each shaped for social.

Why it matters

Together, the design, the SEO foundations and the distribution tooling let a small team publish satire and get it in front of people without a wall of manual work. One story becomes a web article, a search asset, social posts and a narrated reel, which is what a modern satire publication needs to compete for attention.

Build notes

  • A custom front-end and masthead designed for a satire newsroom, built for fast reading and the heavy social referral these sites live on.
  • Ethical SEO built into the templates: clean structure, metadata and schema that earn search traffic on merit rather than through tricks.
  • A publishing layer over the standard WordPress editor that posts a story to the site and shares it to Facebook and Instagram in one move.
  • A social integration layer we built to handle the cross-posting, so authors do not juggle separate apps and logins to get a story out.
  • An AI reel studio that summarises a story into a bite-sized, social-optimised reel for Instagram and TikTok, with premium AI voice models adding spoken narration.
  • Rich media beyond video (quotes, carousels and more) that can be published programmatically or by hand, so one story ships in several formats.
