Serious engineering, built on trust.
Rangefront Labs builds custom software, web and mobile apps, automation, data systems and AI. You work directly with the engineer responsible for what gets built.
The story behind Rangefront.
We started Rangefront because we'd watched the same pattern play out in too many places. A manufacturer running production through spreadsheets. A founder with a good product idea and no technical partner. A professional firm re-keying the same client details into five systems. A council team stuck with software that should have been retired years ago. A charity fighting tools chosen because they were cheap, not because they fit.
The sector changes, but the problem is familiar. Capable people get trapped inside software that fights the work, or they get sold a system by someone who was never going to stick around to fix it. Good ideas stall because proper engineering is made to look like something only a big-city budget can buy.
What we can't stand is the dishonesty. This industry is full of opportunists who see a grant, a deadline, a confused buyer or a business under pressure, and treat it as a payday. We've watched people get taken to the cleaners up close: padded quotes, work that never ships, systems built to lock you in so you have to keep paying to breathe. It's a grift, and it gives honest engineering a bad name.
Rangefront is the opposite of that. We build serious software for the teams who need it: web and mobile apps, platforms, integrations and games, the data and automation behind them, and AI where it actually helps. Small business, product company, government team, industrial operator, professional firm or community organisation, the standard is the same. The work should be explained plainly, built properly and owned by you when it's done.
What we stand for.
We protect your data
We treat your data as something to guard, and we build security into the design from day one. We don't sell it, mine it, or move it offshore.
You own what we build
We build systems you control. The job has gone well when your team can run them without us, not when you are stuck needing us.
Built in Australia
The thinking, design, code and support all happen here, by the people you deal with. We don't hand your build to an offshore shop or a team you never speak to.
Straight answers
We'll tell you when a project isn't worth doing, or when AI isn't the answer. That sometimes costs us the work, and we say it anyway.
Clean, legible work
Clear architecture and plain language, no jargon used as a shield. The people who depend on the system should be able to understand it.
Measured by what changes
We judge ourselves on what shifts in your organisation: hours saved, errors gone, decisions that get made faster.
Here for the long run
Most of what we build is still running years after launch, so we write it to be maintained, document it properly, and stay reachable to fix and extend it. We expect to still be the people you call in a few years.
Who you work with.

Dwayne CharringtonFounder & Principal Engineer
Rangefront Labs is led by Dwayne Charrington, a software engineer who has spent his career building production systems, writing about software and maintaining open-source projects.
He started Rangefront Labs to bring serious engineering to teams that need more than a template, a plugin or a hand-off, from Toowoomba to clients across Australia and beyond.
Founder-led means you work with the engineer accountable for the result, not a rotating cast behind an account manager.
“If your team can't own it and run it without us, it isn't finished.”
How we work.
Founder-led means you deal with the person building the thing. We start by asking what you actually want, and when you're not sure yet, we help fill the gaps: we do the research, throw together a prototype, and put it in front of you for feedback early.
We're not the studio that takes your money, disappears, and reappears months later with a finished thing and a bill. You guide the process and stay in the loop the whole way.
By the end it shouldn't feel like a surprise on Christmas morning. You'll know what you're paying for and what you're getting, well before you get it.
Security philosophy
Security starts with where your data lives and who can reach it. Private and on-prem options exist for the moments when the cloud is the wrong home. Your data is yours; the design should respect that.
Engineering philosophy
We favour clean, well-supported foundations over clever complexity. Systems are built in usable increments, documented properly and designed so your team can run them without us.
